Lee
Konitz, alto saxophone
The celebrated saxophonist Lee Konitz began his jazz career in 1945 in Chicago, where he studied the saxophone and performed with popular jazz orchestras. In 1947, he toured with the Claude Thornhill band and subsequently played and recorded with Miles Davis (The Complete Birth of the Cool on Capitol) and Stan Kenton’s orchestra, among others. He also began a long affiliation with pianist Lennie Tristano. In 1973, he formed the renowned Lee Konitz Nonet, which released the first of several acclaimed albums in 1976. Recipient of many prestigious honors and awards for his accomplishments as a performer, composer, and educator, Konitz received the coveted Jazzpar prize from the Danish government in 1994. He has appeared on over 50 albums since 1953, including Subconscious-Lee (1969), Figure and Spirit (1976), and Jazz Nocturne (1994). Featuring the Sonnets of William Shakespeare Born in the small, sunlit courts of Italy, the 14-line sonnet reached its apotheosis in William Shakespeare, “the world’s best poet” (Harold Bloom). Lyrical, musical, memorable, and brief, the sonnet suits our world. It is the ideal form to chronicle human yearning. |
