In 1947, he toured with the Claude Thornhill band and subsequently played and recorded with Miles Davis (The Complete Birth of the Cool on Capitol) and Stan Kenton’s orchestra, among others. He also began a long affiliation with pianist Lennie Tristano. In 1973, he formed the renowned Lee Konitz Nonet, which released the first of several acclaimed albums in 1976. Recipient of many prestigious honors and awards for his accomplishments as a performer, composer, and educator, Konitz received the coveted Jazzpar prize from the Danish government in 1994. He has appeared on over 50 albums since 1953, including Subconscious-Lee (1969), Figure and Spirit (1976), and Jazz Nocturne (1994).
