A
dazzling young vocalist who recalls a young Ella Fitzgerald, Miami-born
Jennifer Sanon was honored as Outstanding Vocalist at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s
annual Essentially Ellington Competition in 2003 and has since toured and
performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.
In 2003 and 2004, she was a member of the Gibson/Baldwin Grammy High School
Jazz Ensembles, an elite group of 24 student musicians nationwide chosen
to perform in a series of concerts leading up to the Grammy Awards. She
was also named the 2004 Grammy Foundation Honoree. Sanon will enjoy her
first solo performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center in its Singers Over
Manhattan series in the Allen Room during the 2005–06 season.
Walt Whitman,
along with Emily Dickinson, is “one of the two great
American poet-originals” (Allan Bloom). He eloquently expresses in
his verse the vast promise of our nation. This year marks the 150th anniversary
of Whitman’s magnificent volume Leaves of Grass. |
