Joe Temperley, saxophone

James Chirillo, guitar • Dan Nimmer, piano

and the poetry of Richard Wilbur

“Temperley may be the best living baritone saxophonist in jazz today. He has a rich, robust tone, an authoritative melodic style, and he swings heartily. His tone and playing innately command respect.”

—Owen Cordle, Jazz Times

An original member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Scotland-born Joe Temperley (clarinet and saxophone) achieved national prominence in the U.K. as a member of Humphrey Lyttelton’s band. Since coming to New York, he has worked and toured with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Buddy Rich, Joe Henderson, and Clark Terry, among others. In addition to many recordings as a sideman, his albums as a leader include Nightingale, With Every Breath, and Double Duke. He played in the Broadway show Sophisticated Ladies, and his film soundtrack credits include Cotton Club, Biloxi Blues, and Tune In Tomorrow.

Richard Wilbur is a former United States Poet Laureate and two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize. His first book, The Beautiful Changes and Other Poems appeared in 1947. Since then he has published several volumes of poetry, including New and Collected Poems (Faber, 1989).
